Walter Ebertz Library Program

In 2009, the decision was made to use the memorial money in honor of Comunidad Founder, Wally Ebertz, an AVID reader, to start a bookmobile project. There are 4,000 books, in five communities. It's been an interesting start, Peru has never embraced the concept of checking out a book, it does not exisit. To convince the students that they should check out a book, read it at home to their family, exchange the book for another, was all a foreign concept. We had to convince them, it wasn't like stealing...a new unused book would make us sad vs a well used, (maybe slightly rained on) well read book! They are getting in the swing of it, the reading competitions have added an exciting flare.
