Walter Ebertz Library Program
In 2009, the decision was made to use the memorial money in honor of Comunidad Founder, Wally Ebertz, an AVID reader, to start a bookmobile project. There are 4,000 books, in five communities. It's been an interesting start, Peru has never embraced the concept of checking out a book, it does not exisit. To convince the students that they should check out a book, read it at home to their family, exchange the book for another, was all a foreign concept. We had to convince them, it wasn't like stealing...a new unused book would make us sad vs a well used, (maybe slightly rained on) well read book! They are getting in the swing of it, the reading competitions have added an exciting flare.
Reflecting on our 21 year Comunidad history here in Peru. Spending time with Humberto revisiting our projects and progress as we come close to closing the chapter on Fundación Comunidad.
